THE DIFFTY PROJECT
WHAT IS THE DIFFTY PROJECT?
THE PHILOSOPHY
Diffty is a homemade, all-encompassing word. But more importantly, it is an artistic response to the modern illusion of currency.
In days of old, people held value with tangible things: grain, salt, or even gold. Today, global banks dictate the value of random bits of paper, plastic, and metal discs. We all back these fiat currencies with our individual time, our attention, and our belief. Diffty is my direct response to this injustice of value and exchange.
When you delve into it, the true backing of any system is the people. In reality, real value can only be found in people, community, and the art that is created from within that space.
THE ARTIFACTS
The Diffty project satirises standard currency systems by creating alternative tactile tokens and artistic banknotes. Hand-crafted and printed onto raw materials like heavy denim and leather, these pieces are physical manifestations of the Diffty philosophy.
THE VALUE & THE VAULT
Let me be clear: a Diffty holds absolutely zero monetary value. It cannot buy you a coffee, and it is not an investment vehicle. It is purely a conceptual art piece.
Because they are physical, tactile protests against digital and mass-produced fiat, they cannot be bought online. Diffty pieces are strictly exclusive to the physical world and can only be viewed, discussed, and acquired in person at my stall at SPARKS in Bristol...
WHAT IS FIAT?
Fiat money is a national currency that is not backed by a physical commodity like gold or silver. Instead, its value is derived entirely from public trust and the decree (the "fiat") of the issuing government.
The Root: The word fiat is Latin for "let it be done" or "it shall be."
The Mechanism: It has value simply because a government maintains its stability and declares it legal tender for all debts, and because the public collectively agrees to accept it in exchange for goods and services.
At its core, fiat currency is an exercise in collective belief. Unlike historical money — which held intrinsic value through physical materials — fiat money is fundamentally just mass-produced paper, polymer, or digital numbers on a screen. It holds purchasing power not because of what it is made of, but because a central authority dictates its worth and society universally trusts in that system.
